Through Design
As a medium, design plays a crucial role in preserving and expressing cultural identity. Various cultures express themselves through available resources, blending self-expression with utilitarianism. This project focuses on uncovering and analyzing the under documented designs created and owned by Low German Mennonites who migrated to Canada during the early 20th century.
All of the objects we’ve documented are more than just objects—they are fragments of family histories, preserved on shelves and in trunks, quietly waiting to be seen. Though well cared for by the intitutions they take home in, many of these pieces were tucked away, their stories only known to those who once held them. Viewing, documenting, and sharing these Mennonite possessions offers a glimpse into the lives of those who once held them.
This book invites you to rediscover these overlooked designs—and the cultural stories they carry. Order your copy today and take part in preserving this shared heritage.
